The DSS runs the L2H, Launceston to Hobart, yacht race, a 285 nautical mile race starting on 27 December each year. It has rapidly become a favourite with many local yachties, providing an affordable solid ocean race, with the capacity to be home on Christmas Day with family, yet be part of the great Tasmanian New Year festivities around our blue water sailing classics. This iconic annual celebration of racing sees yachts from all three races, the Launceston to Hobart, Sydney to Hobart, and Melbourne to Hobart, battle together up the Derwent Estuary to the finish line and then tie up at the docks in central Hobart, celebrating New Year and the rich maritime heritage of Tasmania – great fun and a warm camaraderie awaits all competitors.
The L2H is open to all boats over 29 feet, meeting Category 3 racing requirements and with a life raft. The 2012 race had over 35 yachts and it is a race rapidly growing in popularity. As one of last year’s skippers stated, ‘this race delivers everything. It has the excitement of full ocean racing but in a coastal environment. It starts in a river, ends in a river, but in between you go through some tough stuff. My boat’s not the latest racing design, but the crew performed well and we learnt a few things – we’ll definitely be back next year.’
The DSS conducts the race in conjunction with the Tamar Yacht Club and significant support is available to owners planning to enter. We are particularly keen to build the number of interstate entries. Together with all the sailing instructions and an information package, the DSS provides assistance for owners wishing to bring their boat early to the Tamar start line, leave their boat later in Hobart, sourcing delivery crew and a life raft. All yachts are fitted with a yacht tracker so your family and friends can follow your race progress on the web through live updates. Trackers are also available for the delivery trip.
Register your interest now and we can send you the upcoming race information package and alert you when entries open.
Thinking of racing but not sure? If you’d like to speak to a previous L2H competitor with a similar boat, the DSS will assist. Please send us your contact details and yacht description and we’ll put you in contact with the right person.
